Soya Bean Oil Extraction Process

Soybean oil is a vegetable oil made from the seeds of soybean & is mostly used for cooking. In Soya bean oil extraction process first we extract soybean oil, the soybeans are broke, heated, rolled into flakes, and solvent-extracted with hexanes and then refined.

The mainly steps involved in soybean oil production include:

Preparation/cleaning of the soybeans

The soybeans are first washed, dried and dehulled prior to oil extraction. The soybean hulls requires to be removed because they absorb oil and give a lower yield. This de-hulling is done by cracking the soybeans and a mechanical separation of the hulls and cracked soybeans. The soybeans are adjusted for moisture content and heated to coagulate the soy proteins and make the oil extraction easier.

Extraction of the soybean oil

First the soybeans are cut in flakes which are put in a percolation extractors and combined with a solvent. The hexane and soybean oil mix is separated from the flakes and transferred to evaporators where the oil and hexane are separated. The evaporated hexane is recovered and returned to the extraction process. The hexane free crude soybean oil is then further purified.

Purification/refining of the extracted oil

The crude soybean oil even now contains many oil-insoluble and oil-soluble impurities that needs to be taken out. The oil-insoluble material are removed with purification and the soluble materials is removed with different processes including eliminating of phosphatides, washing with alkaline solution, and bleaching.
